Which Country Has the Best Ecommerce Infrastructure?

By parcelLab Team 5 min read

Online commerce continues expanding globally. According to the UN's B2C E-commerce Index, the Netherlands currently ranks as the country with the best ecommerce infrastructure. The Index evaluates 151 nations using indicators including postal reliability, internet usage rates, and secure server availability.

Europe Leads the Way

Eight European countries occupy the top 10 positions for ecommerce infrastructure quality. Despite Luxembourg's previous first-place ranking, it dropped to 19th due to declining postal service dependability.

Top 10 Rankings

  1. 1 Netherlands
  2. 2 Singapore
  3. 3 Switzerland
  4. 4 United Kingdom
  5. 5 Norway
  6. 6 Iceland
  7. 7 Ireland
  8. 8 Sweden
  9. 9 New Zealand
  10. 10 Denmark

Security Counts

The Netherlands excels particularly in secure server infrastructure. Secure servers serve as a proxy for ecommerce shops, and the nation hosted over 40,000 pure-play online retailers in 2016 -- the EU's highest figure.

The country also boasts the second-highest proportion of online shoppers (76% of those aged 15+). The UK ranks fourth overall, benefiting from strong postal reliability and widespread ecommerce account adoption. Britain generates the highest annual online spending in Europe, representing 7.3% of GDP.

The Asian Angle

Singapore represents Asia's highest-ranking nation, improving from 18th place previously. It shares top postal reliability ratings alongside Ireland. Other leading Asian markets -- Hong Kong and South Korea -- demonstrate strong ecommerce infrastructure capabilities as well.

The ranking reveals that ecommerce success is not just about technology -- it depends equally on postal reliability, internet penetration, and secure infrastructure. For retailers expanding internationally, understanding these infrastructure differences is critical to delivering consistent customer experiences across markets.
