UK Consumers Report Worse Delivery Experience Than US and Europeans Despite Global Supply Chain Crisis

As the Office for Budget Responsibility reported on supply chain bottlenecks exacerbated by Brexit, parcelLab research revealed concerning disparities in delivery experiences across markets. A YouGov omnibus survey of 2,000+ consumers per country uncovered that UK shoppers face significantly worse outcomes than their international counterparts.

Failed Deliveries

Key Finding

Nearly two-fifths (39%) of UK consumers reported orders that never arrived, compared to 18% in the US, 22% in France, and 23% in Germany.

Delivery Delays

Over 41% of UK online shoppers experienced packages not arriving when needed, versus 23% in France, 27% in Germany, and 29% in the US. The gap between UK and other markets is striking.

Brand Loyalty Impact

The consequences of poor delivery extend beyond individual transactions. When experiencing poor delivery:

  • 35% of UK consumers refused to reorder from that retailer
  • Significantly higher than France (21%), the US (23%), and Germany (25%)
  • 49% of UK consumers with negative experiences contacted customer services to locate packages

What UK Consumers Demand

UK shoppers have clear expectations for enhanced communication:

  • 61% wanted shipment notifications
  • 66% requested regular package location updates
  • 47% desired map-based tracking
  • 65% expected immediate alerts regarding delays

Research Methodology

YouGov omnibus survey of 2,000 representative consumers per country: UK (2,076), Germany (2,184), France (2,048), US (1,163) adults. Fieldwork was conducted during the October-August 2021 period, weighted to represent all adults aged 18+.

The data paints a clear picture: UK consumers are experiencing worse delivery outcomes than their international counterparts, and they are more likely to abandon retailers as a result.
