Alternative Delivery Methods -- How Delivery Services Can Modernize Shipping

By parcelLab 7 min read

Transportation generates roughly 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany. Shipping companies are exploring alternative delivery methods to address environmental concerns while solving last-mile delivery challenges. From electric mobility and depot solutions to autonomous robots, innovation is transforming the logistics landscape.

1. City Hub and E-Bike

Deutsche Post operates "Cubicycles" -- four-wheeled pedal-powered vehicles with cargo boxes -- reducing CO2 compared to delivery trucks. GSL similarly deployed e-bikes with adjustable trailers across multiple German cities including Nuremberg and Dortmund. These solutions prove advantageous in congested urban centers by eliminating parking search time.

2. Container

UPS piloted container concepts in Hamburg, positioning interim storage units throughout city centers. Messengers then complete deliveries on foot, via handcart, or by bicycle. This approach addresses double-parking disruptions and enables better scheduling predictions, improving customer communication regarding delivery timing.

3. Starship Delivery Robot

Autonomous robots travel at approximately 6.4 km/h and carry up to 10 kilograms across 5-kilometer distances. Hermes conducted trials with Domino's in Hamburg. However, challenges include inability to ring doorbells, vulnerability to vandalism, and reliance on smartphone notifications. One operator reportedly monitored up to 100 vehicles via the Internet.

4. Trunk Delivery

DHL and Volkswagen partnered on a program allowing customers to receive packages directly in vehicle trunks. Owners generate transaction authorization numbers via smartphone apps, specifying delivery windows. Vehicles must park within 300 meters of delivery addresses. Urban parking constraints present practical limitations.

5. Electric Delivery Truck

Volkswagen's e-Crafter offers 173-kilometer range at 90 km/h maximum speed. Operating costs reportedly represent less than half those of comparable diesel vehicles. Federal subsidies apply to eligible models, with extended vehicle tax exemptions for early registrations.

6. Parcel Stations for Multi-Family Houses

DHL deployed parcel boxes at apartment buildings in Berlin. Customers receive notifications via email or app upon delivery. Return parcels can be placed in boxes for carrier pickup. This eliminates neighbor deliveries and unnecessary vehicle trips.

Alternative delivery methods demonstrate viable modernization pathways. Companies implementing electric vehicles, depot solutions, and innovative logistics strategies simultaneously reduce traffic congestion, improve last-mile efficiency, and generate environmental benefits. Continued market evolution suggests further optimization opportunities ahead.
